What makes cybersecurity important?

The importance of cybercrime security is on the rise. Our society is more technologically dependent than ever before and this trend is bound to rise. Personal data that could lead to identity theft is now accessible to the public via social media accounts. Sensitive information comprising things like credit card information, bank account details, social security numbers, etc. are now stored in cloud storage devices like Google Drive or Dropbox. Thus, no matter if you are an individual or own a small or a big business, you depend on computer systems every day and this makes information and computer security the need of the hour. This when clubbed with things like poor cloud service security, IoT and smartphones, we get a range of cybersecurity threats that were not even known a few decades ago.

Governments across the world paying more attention to cybercrimes. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is one such example that depicts the steps taken by the Government to control cybercrimes. GDPR has augmented the reputational damage of data breaches by forcing organizations operating in the EU to appoint an officer for data protection, communicate any breach of data and encrypt data for the purpose of privacy. Though there aren’t any national laws supervising data breach disclosure in the US, there are distinct data breach laws in different states.
